Want to register emission reduction units (ERE’s) with your charger? Since 1 January 2026, the Dutch Emissions Authority (NEa) requires the MID-certified meter to sit inside the charger itself. A separate meter in the meter cupboard no longer counts. Look up your model below for a first answer.

What does MID-certified mean?

MID stands for the Measuring Instruments Directive: the European rules a measuring instrument has to meet. An MID-certified meter in your charger meets those rules. For ERE’s, what matters is the meter that measures how much electricity goes to your car.

Put simply: without valid metering you cannot show how much electricity you delivered to transport. And then you cannot register ERE’s.

Why the meter has to be inside the charger

Since 1 January 2026, the NEa requires the MID meter to be integrated into the charger. A separate MID meter in the meter cupboard or fuse box does not meet that requirement. Do you have a home charger without its own MID meter, and a sub-meter in the meter cupboard? Then that setup does not qualify.

Good to know: only the meter that measures delivery to the vehicle has to be MID-certified. The main meter of your grid connection does not.

How to check whether your charger is MID-certified

  1. Look up your model in the check at the top. That gives a first indication; the proof is the document in step 2.
  2. Ask for the proof. According to the NEa, you show MID certification with a certificate from a conformity assessment by a designated Notified Body, or with an EU declaration of conformity from the meter's manufacturer. You request that document from your installer, supplier or manufacturer.
  3. Keep it with your records, together with the rest of your registration data.

Is your model not in the check? Send us the brand and type via contact and we will take a look.

Charging at home or as a business: what applies to you?

Charging at home? Then the NEa requires an MID meter inside the charger itself, unless you have a separate connection used only for charging. The transition year for businesses below does not apply to you. Home charging always counts at the grid-average renewable share; in 2026 that is 50.5%. What that earns you, you can work out with the calculator.

Charging as a business? Then there is another route: a connection or secondary allocation point (SAP, a separate metering point within your connection) used only for charging. If you have one, not every charge point needs its own MID meter. With a SAP, the NEa does require your business to be registered as the offtaker of the main connection; a SAP alone is not enough. If an office or other consumption shares the same connection, the NEa only allows registration if every charge point has an MID meter. Did your business already register before 2026 with an external MID meter? Then a transition year applies until 1 January 2027.

All the rules, with a decision tree per situation, are in MID meter and charge point: what do you need to register ERE’s?

What if your charger has no MID meter?

If you charge at home and have no separate connection used only for charging, you cannot register ERE’s with this charger. In practice that means a model with a built-in MID meter.

For a business, the two routes above apply. Which route fits depends on the number of charge points and what else is on your connection. Not sure? Ask us and we will take a look before you replace anything.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know whether my charger has an MID meter?

Look up your model in the check on this page. The proof is the manufacturer's EU declaration of conformity or a certificate from a Notified Body. You request it from your installer or manufacturer.

Does the main meter of my connection also have to be MID-certified?

No. The MID requirement only applies to the meter that measures delivery to the vehicle, and according to the NEa it has to sit inside the charger itself since 2026.

Can I register home charging with an MID meter in the meter cupboard?

No. There is no transition year for private individuals: the NEa requires the MID meter to sit inside the charger itself.

My charger is not in the check. What now?

Ask the manufacturer or installer for the EU declaration of conformity. If it lists the Measuring Instruments Directive (MID) for the meter in your charger, it counts. Not sure? Send us the brand and type.
