ERE compliance requirements for charging stations
ERE credits are only issued if your charging data meets strict standards. Learn what compliance requires, why data fails, and how to protect your revenue.

Compliance determines whether a charging session earns an ERE. If the registration is not sound, no emission reduction unit is created — however good the charging session itself was. The Dutch Emissions Authority (NEa) oversees this through an annual independent verification.
What exactly does verification test?
The test is about traceability: the energy delivered, the source of the electricity and the calculated CO₂ reduction must be consistently recorded. Worth knowing: the verifier does not test session by session or client by client, but at the level of the entire service provider. The materiality threshold is 2% of the total registered CO₂-equivalent chain emission reduction, per type of renewable energy (Energy for Transport Decree, article 23(2)). If a provider exceeds that threshold, it is a problem for the whole client base, not one faulty session.
Why does so much data fail?
Standalone spreadsheets, manual entry and disconnected systems make the CO₂ justification untraceable. Data that looks correct on paper still fails at verification — not because the charging session was wrong, but because the chain behind it does not hold up.
What happens when a registration is rejected?
If the materiality threshold is exceeded, the registrations involved get a rejected status in the register. That is not the same as "all registrations are automatically set to zero": the NEa investigates the consequences case by case. It is a real risk, though — which is why compliance is not a side issue but the core of a working ERE process.
How do you prevent this?
By registering charging data through a closed, automated system rather than manually. A connected chain — from charge point to registration — keeps the CO₂ justification traceable, and that is exactly where most rejections happen. More on metering requirements is in MID meter and charge point; common mistakes are listed in common ERE mistakes. Check whether your charger is MID-certified.
What Voltico does for you here
Voltico registers your charging data through a connected, automated system instead of manual exports, so the CO₂ justification stays traceable all the way to verification. Not sure your setup holds up? Get in touch.
