Unlock value by monetizing EV charging sessions

Monetizing EV charging sessions generates more value than you think. On November 5, we hosted a knowledge event for advisors, installers, and partners. Together with OLYX, a broker active in the renewable energy market, and Renewable Strategies, we explored how companies can prepare for upcoming regulation from Brussels and The Hague, and what this means for the market. The European Renewable Energy Directive III, RED III, is expected to be implemented on 1 January 2026 and requires member states to further stimulate the use of renewable energy. This will have direct implications for mobility, energy, and emission markets.
HBE and ERE emission credits: overlooked revenue model of charging infrastructure
The conclusion was clear. Many companies are knowingly or unknowingly leaving up to €0.20 per charged kWh on the table.
In the Netherlands, electric driving is supported through so-called charging credits that contribute to the reduction of CO₂ emissions. Despite this, the system is still used to a limited extent.
Key insights from our event, shared by our speakers Job Wennekers, Florine Jonkers and Maarten Poot:
As of January 1, 2026, the current system of renewable energy units (HBEs) will transition to emission credits (EREs). While HBEs are based on the volume of renewable energy used, EREs are based on actual CO₂ emission reductions.
The market value of charging credits is largely driven by supply and demand for high-quality biofuels, which makes credits from electric charging relatively valuable.
Participation for companies with charging infrastructure is voluntary, but not without obligations, and offers a concrete opportunity to make charging financially attractive.
From 1 January 2026, emission credit service providers can fully manage this process on behalf of companies and private individuals.
Fuel suppliers have an annual obligation to hold sufficient HBE or ERE credits and act, together with traders, as buyers in this market.
Our smart software to unlock value from every charging session
With Voltico, we have developed smart and intuitive software that makes it easy to monetize emission credits. This creates direct value for companies with charging infrastructure and supports the acceleration of the transition to a sustainable future.
By simplifying and opening up the complex process around emission credits, a broader group of organizations can make more sustainable choices that also deliver financial returns. Fully transparent, compliant, and without administrative burden.
